With so much to do and see in Brighton, there are going to times when you need some down time and you have to stop for lunch. When it comes to places to stop for a lunch in Brighton you are truly spoiled for choice. Especially in busy parts of the city where there is quite literally a place to eat every few steps, some good some not so. Dining out can be expensive though, so here is our selection of what we think is ten of the best places to have lunch for under £10.
1. Iydea - Kensignton Gardens, Brighton.
This award winning Cafe is perfect when you want to have something healthy, without losing out on taste. Serving great quality vegetarian food, prepared fresh and delivered in a fast canteen style, making it perfect when you just want to grab something. Once you’ve selected a main dish, your plate is then piled with whatever combination of vegetables, salad, sauces or topping you desire. Iydea has great variety with a menu that changes daily and it’s great value - which is maybe why I’ve never seen it empty. Prices £4.70 - £7.70 www.iydea.co.uk
2. Foodillic - North Road, Brighton
By far the best ‘all you can eat’ in Brighton, Foodillic is another great place to stop for a fast, healthy lunch, although you won’t get rushed. So if you want to take your time, that’s fine. On offer are a selection of hot dishes (normally stews), platters of salads, vegetables, soups and breads. Everything is prepared fresh, these Mediterranean style dishes are packed with flavour and with plenty on offer it should cater for every taste. Foodillic never fails to deliver with it’s delicious food, friendly staff and for £6.45, it’s hard to go wrong. 3. Pompoko - Church Street, Brighton
This popular Japanese Cafe/Restaurant steers away from the normal Sushi-style selections seen in many of the places in Brighton. Instead Pompoko offers dishes picked to tantalise the taste buds of both Japanese and Western palates, which deliver on taste while also being satisfying. With most dishes around the £4.00 mark, it’s the perfect place to go when you fancy something different, inexpensive and quick. The food is prepared fresh but you normally don’t have to wait more than 10 minutes for your food.
4. Palm Court Fish & Chips - Brighton Pier
A visit to Brighton or the seaside just wouldn’t be complete without ‘fish n chips’ and there can be no better place to eat them than on Brighton Pier. While not the cheapest fish and chips to be found in Brighton at around £9.95, everything is cooked fresh and certainly one of the best. Traditional British Fish ‘n’ Chips at its best.
5. Al Duomo Italian Restaurant - Pavilion Parade, Brighton
You’ll be sure to get warm and friendly welcome at Al Duomo, where some good authentic Italian food awaits. Situated right next to the Royal Pavilion, it’s in the perfect location for lunch when visiting the sights of Brighton. The menu offers a huge selection of delicious Italian classics, with fresh, locally caught fish, amazing pizzas (maybe the best in Brighton) and an array of tasty pasta and meat dishes with most ingredients sourced from Italy. The attentive staff do a fantastic job, nothing is too much trouble and although they’re just going through the motions you are made to feel utterly welcome. 6. Temptation - Gardner Street, Brighton
Sit back with the sights and sounds of the North Laines as your backdrop and enjoy a taste of all things Sussex. This award winning Cafe serves fresh, locally sourced produce to offer a delicious menu specifically designed to make the most of what the county has to offer. The high quality ingredients are expertly put together offering something to suit every taste, the food here is truly a taste sensation. Although the menu has Mediterranean influences, it is quintessentially English and the quirky interior, friendly staff, coupled with the excellent surroundings make this the perfect place to grab some lunch. Average price around £8.95.
7. Sabai - North Street, Brighton
This family run, Thai Gastrobar offers a warm, relaxed atmosphere, bringing the feel of South Asia to the heart of Brighton. Conveniently situated close to the Royal Pavilion Sabai offer an extensive menu, using quality locally sourced ingredients where possible and herbs imported from Thailand to produce fantastic food, high in flavour. Some Thai restaurants dumb down their flavours for Western tastes but not at Sabai, here the food packs a real punch and the services is friendly and unrushed. 8. Cote Bistro - Church Road, Brighton
Superb Parisian style food, served in an amazing atmosphere. Cote mixes simple fresh cooking with robust flavours to produce classic French cuisine. With a menu featuring classics such as moules marinieres, steak frites and corn fed chicken, it’s as if Cote was picked right from the streets of Paris. With staff dedicated to providing quality service, you can enjoy well made food at a very reasonable price. With weekend specials that are a bargain at £9.95, Cote is a great place when you want to get away from it all.
9. Solera D Tapas - Sydney Street, Brighton
Tucked away in the bustling North Laines, this dinky little tapas bar is possibly one of the best in Brighton. Serving excellent quality tapas dishes and amazing Spainish wines, Solera is one of Brighton’s little gems. The well presented food is expertly cooked and delivered to your table by friendly staff. Perfect calamari, lovely Spanish ham and chicken with chorizo that hits the spot every time. You could easily spend the whole day there ordering dish after dish but this of course wouldn’t full within your £10. Intimate and lively, perch yourself around the little tables and experience real authentic tapas. Two people can have a nice selection for around £19.95.
10. La Choza - Gloucester Road, Brighton
La Choza is Brighton’s first authentic Mexican restaurant. Serving real, authentic Mexican street food, it’s real must if you want something healthy while giving your senses a real treat. The meats are slow cooked, braised constantly, so they have bags of flavour and are mouth wateringly good. La Choza has an amazing atmosphere, the place is always buzzing and it can be hard to get a table but it’s well worth the wait. The food offers complex flavours, a real taste of Mexico, the ‘best’ nachos in the World and there are also some real treats for vegetarians too. Price £4.50 to £6.50 www.lachoza.co.uk
